[Japanese Gecko – Home Talisman]
Geckos are written in kanji as "shuku" (or "house guardian") and have been familiar to people since ancient times. They prey on flying insects that are attracted to street lamps and window lights, so the word "house guardian" probably came from the word "yamori" (gecko) because they protect the house.
