Recent research has revealed that the ancestor of the domestic cat is the African wildcat (a subspecies of the European wildcat), which lived in the deserts of the Middle East about 131,000 years ago. Because the cat did not touch grains and only preyed on pests and insects that damaged them, the interests of both animals coincided, and cats that protected the grains came to be cherished as beneficial animals.
