[Deer – Messenger of God –]
He is considered a divine messenger at Kashima Shrine and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. In the Kojiki, it is said that when Amaterasu Omikami's messenger (Amenohabari) requested Okuninushi-no-Mikoto to hand over the country, he sent Ame-no-Kaku as a messenger. This Ame-no-Kaku is considered to be the deer god ('Kaku' means deer). The 'Nara deer' that live around Kasuga Taisha Shrine are protected as a natural monument.
